So, all this past weekend (when I wasn't at Romas) I was at the Desdemona Music Festival in Cincinnati! Talk about a fun time... I got to see The Apples in Stereo, We Are Scientists (AMAZING!), The Stills, The Fiery Furnaces, The Walkmen... I had to miss Rogue Wave, but apparently they had some technical difficulties, so really no harm done. Also, in a surreal half hour, we saw Ghostface Killah from the Wu Tang Clan close out on Friday night... Indie kids and Ghostface- its a tough thing to picture. Anyways, Sunday night, Matt introduced me to Keith from We Are Scientists!!!! OMFG- It was insane! I embarrassed myself a little bit, but I'm ok with it because I got to meet the hottest fucking rockstar EVER! *Swoon* Their set was probably one of my facvorite concerts- they are awesome live- so much energy! I don't know how Keith didn't die on the cords attaching his guitar to the amps. other best performance of the night- The Walkmen- they didn't play What's In It For Me, but rocked out versions of Little House of Savages and The Rat made for a great performance, closed with Louisiana. If the festival happens again next year- I would highly recommend going!

I LOVE the Urban Dictionary

    <lj:music>occasional coughing of studious collegiates</lj:music>

Everything I ever learned in college, I learned from the Urban Dictionary:

skeet
3136 up, 506 down

"Skeet" is actually a form of birth control practiced by the African-American tribes of North America near the beginning of the 21st Centruy. Visionaries of the time (such as Lil Jon and Nelly) recognized the inevitable and everpresent danger of overpopulation in their land and decided to take action. They discovered an ancient form of birth control used by their ancestors that involved "pulling out and shooting" (much like skeet shooting) during sexual intercourse, as to not impregnate the female, or "biatch". The visionaries spread the word the only way they knew how: rap music. People would listen to the songs of the visionaries during ritual smoking ceremonies and chant "skeet skeet skeet!". Every tribe of their kind in the land listened to rap music and the idea of skeeting quickly gained in popularity. Soon, the entire African-American tribe had done its part to offset the effects of overpopulation through generations of skeeting on the women that they did not wish to impregnate. However, the other tribes of the land (most notabley, the Whites and Mexicans) did not support the "Skeet Movement". They continued to grow in number until the Whites eventually ate the Mexicans. The Whites, however, refused to eat the African-Americans for fear of sickle cell anemia, so they all got on a very large boat and went back to England.

"Excuse me, I didn't catch your name, but would you mind if I skeeted on you? Seeing as how we just met and all, I am not fully convinced that you would make a good mother, so I am electing not to ejaculate inside of you. Let me go get you a towel."

Contemporary Art

I haven't done an art update in a long time, which is sad because my Art History 350 class is so COOL! Here are a few that we've been doing recently. We've been talking about art and politics and they are intertwined. Especially since nowadays, almost all contemporary art is invested with some sort of political meaning or significance. A few of these images are from the Culture Wars of the 1980's, which I thought were really powerful images, and I think that if the gay rights movement began to bring some of these back, it would put the cause in front of a lot more people.

To start off: an artist by the name of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, a gay artist who was the poster child of the Group Material and an icon of the culture wars, he eventually died of AIDS.

This image is of his piece "Pefect Lovers" and it is in honor of his partner, Jeff, who died of AIDS before Gonzalez-Torres did. I think that the 2 synchronized clocks are a beautiful way of honoring their relationship.

Also for Jeff, after he died, Gonzalez-Torres created "jeff," a pile of candy (which weighed exactly Jeff's body weight) is placed in a corner of a gallery. Viewers are invited to take the candy with them or eat it, whatever. It is the artists way of sharing Jeff with the world. Everyday, the gallery restocks "Jeff"

Next, is Krzystof Wodizcko (I probably spelled that wrong). He specializes in projecting powerful images onto public buildings and monuments. It gets his message out to the public, without placing him in danger of being arrested for grafiti. My favorite work of his (and I'm pissed that I couldnt find a good picture of it) is a projection of a swastika onto the front entrance of the South African Embassy, during the protests against apartheid. Here are a few of his other projections dealing with politics and politicians:

Now for a little feminist art. Judy Chicago put together a piece entitled "The Dinner Party" for an exhibition of the 80's. As you can imagine, it was a long table, set with different place settings that represented different prominent women thoughout history. I have an installation view of "The Dinner Party" as well as a detail view of the place setting for Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of the most influential Queens of France, and did a lot to inlfuence the renaissance in France.

Last, but not least is my new favorite artist, a photographer: Ryan McGinley. We havent ever actually talked about him in my art class, but he is starting to gain some fame for his photo essays for New York Times Magazine and Vice. His photos are all about spontaneous action and beauty. Of his photos of the grafiti team IRAK, McGinley says that he couldn't be less interested in their finished products, but rather how they get there. My favorite image is "Dash Bombing" (seen first.)

Blair's birthday weekend was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Including the part where we all got really drunk, Blair puked, beer pong with VTech boys, and brownie cake. It's too bad that we didn't get to go to the zoo. We were all really excited about going. The weather was so gross Saturday morning when we woke up though. Besides, everyone was pretty hung over.
Anyways, I'm just trying to make it to the end of the semester now. I don't think I'm gonna get a good enough GPA for my new laptop, but I'm still doing WAY better than before. It's just so hard to spend the last few weeks going every day to class. There aren't any more days off, and the weather is so nice out- I just want to go cruise around. Blair and I were running errands with the top down today, and it was great. Tommorrow, I'm going to wear a skirt for the second time this season! And now, because I don't have ANY papers due till next week, I'm going to bed early (I just got out of a hot bath- one of my favorite things to do!)

I have a new man in my life, and before you get TOO excited or anything the Baron von Webb is the cutest African Dwarf Frog ever to be purchased from Meijers! He lives on top of my dresser, and is a little bit spastic, but hes just so darn cute!

2. I can NOT wait till the semester ends! I'm hitting my 'I'm so sick of school phase!' At least with summer classes, I have a lot of free time during the day, and the weather's always nice.

3. Blair's birthday is next weekend! And were all super excited for box seats at Keeneland and a trip to the ZOO!!!! I haven't been to the zoo in so long! Can't wait to see the gators!

4. I'm using a lot of exclamation points, sorry...

5. House hunting for next year continues, what a headache.

6. mmmmmm...
In more ways than one, there are impossibilities in my life. A. I'm trying to clean my room right now (slightly comparable to attempting to set up a new government in Iraq) B. I have my Art History midterm tommorrow, which I have not studied for AT ALL! C. Tommorrow, I also have a paper due for my English class- but it's a load of bullshit, so I can knock that out no problem. D. Friday is my Astronomy midterm, and I may actually want to look at the study guide this time, considering I got a D on the last test. E. The Cats are playing horribly right now at Tennessee- we knew it would be tough, but be valiant.

Mardi Gras was fun last night. Blair, Sarah Mac and I went over to Daniel and Chris' and played a little beer pong/ flip cup with them and their roomies. The highlight however was the afterparty, when Blair, Chris and I attempted to go to the library at 1230 and do homework. Needless to say, we didn't get much done. We spent most of the time chatting and playing around on the 5th floor- we didn't get in till 530 am! Although the one thing we did accomplish was designing a game of W.T. Young Hide and Seek.

Saurday is Mac's birthday party, I'm attempting to make a mix for it right now (I'll type in the playlist in a bit) I'm a little bit scared for this debaucherous evening coming up- it's coming to prove that it will be HUGE. Daniel and Chris are helping Blair make a temporary Beer Pong table, and Blair is hanging up a massive piece of butcher's paper for everyone to sign and leave messages. I do have to work before hand, but the party wont really get started until 11 anyways.

Mac's Party Playlist:
1. "Don't Worry About It" N.E.R.D.
2. "Get Over It" OK Go!
3. "Ch-Check it Out" The Beastie Boys
4. "Swing Swing" All- American Rejects
5. "She Wants to Move" N.E.R.D.
6. "Feel Good Inc." Gorillaz
7. "Time Is Runnning Out" Muse
8. "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt" We Are Scientists
9. "Steady As She Goes" The Raconteurs
10. "Jerk It Out" The Caesars
11. "You Really Got Me" The Kinks
12. "Modern Swinger" The Pink Spiders
13. "Ride" The Vines
14.
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! So, here I am again, writing a livejournal entry instead of writing my paper like I'm supposed to. This time it's a comparison between Jane Eyre and the creature in Frankenstein- fun huh? The best part about it is that I have to bring 24 copies to class, one for everyone; then on Friday everyone is going to give me feedback about what they liked and didn't like about it. Basically, on Friday, I get ripped to shreds by my peers: YAY RAH! So, now I'm trying to finish this damn thing by 7 am, when I'm going to take a shower and then take this shit to Kinkos to get copied.

This weekend will be AMAZING though. Crista's party is on Friday, and though it will be big, I'm excited to let loose. I've decided to refuse to be the responsible one, or be responisble for ANYONE- this will probably get me raped or kidnapped, but whatever. I'm excited that I get to dress up and cut loose.

Speaking of cutting- I CHOPPED OFF ALL OF MY HAIR! Like 6 inches, forreal, it's way different. I'll get some pics posted up on yahoo, facebook, etc.

why is it so easy to write something like this in 2 minutes- but I have to drag my feet along to try to write a 4-pg essay that I already have an outline for!?

I haven't made a real post in a long time... I don't really have a whole lot of things to say at this point. I'm finally doing what I should be doing in school (ie. my homework), There's not a whole lot of drama or pain or suffering (for me anyways [but has there ever been?]), and I'm generally pretty damn happy. I'm not going out and doing a lot of partying this semester, is it lame to say that I'm over it? Really its just because there are some people that I don't want to party with. That's why I LOVE going up to Miami to visit everyone, because its so DIFFERENT than here. I kind of miss my people from last year, the Northern KY kids and the sorority girls. The NKY folks are throwing a party in March, so I'm definetely going to make an effort to go. They were always fun to party with. I was supposed to go over to Phil's tonight for the SuperBowl, but A. everyone backed out on me and B. Responsibility prevails, since I have to finish typing a paper and read a book by tommorrow. I'm definetely not doing either during Grey's Anatomy!

...Off to finish reading "Maria: or The Wrongs of Woman" - a truly horrendous book written by Mary Shelley's mother. I don't recommend it.

I just had the MOST STRESSFUL 7 hour shift at Romas tonight! One of the girls called in sick, so it was just Sarah B and I hostessing plus my manager Justin. Normally, it wouldn't have been soooo bad except for the fact that all of Lexington must have gotten together and decided to bring parties of 10 to Tony Romas. We had like 5 billion big tops who were of course up my ass the entire night, while the small tops did not get the concept of a quote time. If I say you're gonna have to wait 45 minutes, do not come to the host stand after 10 minutes to check and see where your name is! Especially if you haven't heard me call any names! I was still first cut thankfully, but that didn't happen until about 1040. So finally I'm back at my apartment winding down and stressing over all the homework that I have to finish by Monday...

At least Jimmy and Ricco are making pancakes in the morning at work

1. Finally got to go see "Shopgirl" after a few ill-fated tries. The movie was AMAZING, but the book was better. I think the actual novella conveys more emotions and thoughts which were essential to the story, but were lost in translation to the screen play. Jason Schwartzman was PERFECT!

2. I got a letter from UK after grades were posted telling me that I had been suspended from the University for failing to earn a 2.0 semester GPA, which is R-I-D-I-C-U-L-U-S because I earned a 3.4!!! And even if its related to my previous semesters in which I did less than stellar work... I still got a fucking 3.4! Why would you want to suspend someone after that? So I emailed my adviser, and she said (UK is closed till Jan. 3 so we cant do anything yet) that if indeed (no I'm not lying) earn a 3.4 for the semester, then something will be done about it... YAY RAH. So it should all work out by next week.

Installment # 2 of the Sex Soundtrack: "The Propositioning Song"

I figure, if you've been dating someone for a while... then this would be the sweet song playing that would go along with the first time you had sex... or talked about it

"First Day of My Life"
Bright Eyes

"This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don't know where I am
I don't know where I've been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I'd let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remeber the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed
You felt as if you had just woke up
And you said, "this is the first day of my life
"I'm glad I didn't die before I met you
"Now I don't care, I could go anywhere with you
"And I'd probably be happy."

So if you want to be with me
With these things there's no telling
We'll just have to wait and see
But I'd rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery
Besides maybe this time its different
I mean I really think you'll like me."

I was pissed though because Rooney wasn't there, and some band called This Is Me Smiling played, who were eh-okay.
In lieu of Finals week this upcoming week, I've decided to bring you the last edition of "Fine Art with Cam." This edition is dedicated to Modern Art, which we have been focusing on in the weeks preceding finals... Some are artworks that I like, others just downright strange, er... interesting... ENJOY!

"The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living"
Damien Hirst

I begin this edition with a work by an English artist who is very famous today. This piece is a giant tank of formaldehyde containing a dead shark, I think the title speaks for itself

"Still Life with Chair Caning"
Pablo Picasso

Who could talk about modern art without mentioning Picasso? I think that this collage may be one of my favorite works by him. The chair caning, a found object, represents his chair pulled up to the circular table of the cafe, on which is sittin his newspaper (or journal), glass of water and lemon... genius!

"Nude Descending a Staircase"
Marcel Duchamp

Yes, this painting was done by the same artist who appropriated a urinal as art. This is one of his earlier pieces, being influenced by cubism, and one of my favorite cubist paintings. The painting was also heavily influenced by action photographs, which were developed around this time; you can see the downward movement of the nude, and the action which he left behind.

"White Car Crash 19 Times"
Andy Warhol

Warhol, definetely another artist who must be mentioned with Modern art. A horrific picture of a car accident reproduced and silk screened onto a canvas 19 times... but seeing so many images of the same tragic event... you kind of start to lose the emotion you're supposed to feel seeing mangled bodies and automobiles. Its a lot like seeing horrific images repeated so many times on the news, it begins to lose its power.

"Cut Piece"
Yoko Ono

A preformance piece by the wife of John Lennon, Yoko Ono would sit on stage and ask audience members to come cut away pieces of her clothing. The preformance would end when audience members were no longer willing to come on stage and cut away any more of her clothes. The piece represented the little bit of everyone that we take away with us and give away when we interact interpersonally, as well as the vulnerability we experience as a part of society. Yoko was never naked on stage, because every audience was too ashamed and uncomfortable to cut away the most essential parts of her clothes (being).

I guess thats enough for now, but I may feel inspired to do Part 2 of the Modern Art edition, since there are so many cool pieces to share.

It's 5:15 in the morning, and I've just accomplished about 3/4 of what I'd meant to do by midnight. I love all-nighters... especially when you have class all day the next day, and work for 5 and a half hours after that.

In case you're wondering, I had a 3-4 page paper to write for Music class, which should have been done AGES ago. I attended the concert that I wrote about on November 4th for goodness sake. But, as I feel that my music class is some what of a joke for me, I kept putting it off longer and longer... until the night before its due, which is how we roll in college.
Not only did I have a music paper to write, but I also have a Political Science test today (since its now Friday morning). My parents and I are expecting me to get an A in this class, which is actually very possible... but considering that the study guide questions are things like: Explain and discuss the structure of the federal court system... my chances are looking slim on this one. But I did get A's on my first 2 tests, and an A on the blogging assignment, so if I get a C or above on this test, I should end up with a high B or low A... and that's without figuring in the 3% extra credit we're going to get on monday from him, for attending his "bonus class," since today counts as our final, instead of holding during traditional finals week.

Wish me luck... I have 2 hours to sleep before waking up to shower before my 9 o clock

Just one small state of the union before I go to bed...

1. I am officially swearing off drinking for a while for reasons I will not disclose, which actually have NOTHING to do with me.

2. My project has been pretty cold, we haven't talked since before break...

3. Mac and I are going to see All American Rejects, Rooney and The Academy Is in December... Went shopping today for myself and NOT for christmas (a wise decision on my part, but who could say no to a S'mores shirt???)

This entry goes out to my crazy DDR dancing Ninja neighbor Steve... its his guest appearance, which I have a feeling could turn into a guest series with all of his crazy adventures.

Chapter 1 of Steve's Crazy Adventure Series
(A TV deal is in the works...)

As 7 am flashes across his digital clock, our hero, Steve McAtee, sits at his computer reflecting back on the night, which hasn't ended until now. The clock continues to tick away into the morning... which fills his room with fresh sunlight. Finally, he moves to wash his hands which are filthy from a night spent exploring abandonded houses and barns, including drama involving a large, dead raccoon and some rope being dragged around from a friend's car. So now, at 7:15, Steve finally collapses into bed to catch a few hours of sleep before his thanksgiving festivities begin.

...Chapter 2 to be coming soon, I'm sure
